STORIES FROM MY DANCING BODY

If you dare to listen, our bodies are wailing. Oceanic tears signal the isolation derived from screens and guttural screams show up daily in our divisive times. We are moving further away from our physical and spiritual home, the body.

Stories from My Dancing Body, a collection of lush and joyous essays provides an inside look at what dancers have discovered about the mysteries that lie within and what our bodies can teach us about cultivating a life of connectivity, lightness and wonder. As a celebrated dance artist, world traveled dancer and life-long student of sensation, I immerse myself in embodied experiences. From the terror of sneaky fear, tough skin and spineless behavior to the exhilaration of falling, flying and witchy dancing, 42 essays share the wisdom I have garnered since my soul first dropped into the fatty cocoon of my baby body.

Five sections provide a structural container:

Brilliant Designs revels in the beauty of anatomical structures, which serve as metaphors for daily living. What can the design of the spine teach us about fluidity and rigidity? How does the tiny foot manage to hold all our weight day after day?

Lightness of Being pokes at processes which provoke change in everyday activities, whether taking a bath, bouncing in a rave or experimenting with our breathing patterns.

Wondrous Wonder dives deep into the heartaches and wonders of life as experienced in altered states, dreams and myths, threading together our emotional and spiritual selves.

Cellular Memories elucidates how our instincts, reflexes and memories shape life choices and identities. Can we reset the nervous system before it throws us into panic?

Connective Tissue explores the energetic bonds spinning within our internal spaces and throughout cycles of nature. Can a spiral connect us to seashells, hurricanes and galaxies? How do we prepare for the ultimate discarding of our magical teacher, the body?

Rituals at the end of each essay allow the reader to physically experience ideas in the text and uncover the wisdom of their own bodies.
