TEACHING WORKSHOPS

Body to Body - A Teaching Workshop

This workshop explores the complexities of teaching physical practice and asks participants to consider their roots and research trajectories as an embodied practitioner within their chosen dance forms. Artists learn entrepreneurial skills and come away with writings for jobs and promotion and tenure.

In this workshop, we…

  • write autobiographies of our dance journeys;

  • study educational theories and historical and cultural contexts of our dances;

  • learn skills for creating an inclusive community and de-colonizing the syllabus;

  • develop a new course, hone an old course;

  • workshop sequencing, cueing, evaluative practices.

  • apply various somatic and conditioning approaches to build safe practices;

  • Write teaching philosophies, syllabi and cover letters for jobs, funding, marketing.

Provide opportunities for your students/faculty to conduct in-depth research into teaching! Offer onboarding workshops for adjuncts or new faculty, or course delivery (1-3 credits) for low/ high residency dance graduate programs! The workshop is flexibly designed: 1-5- day modules, online or live, individual coaching and mentoring are also available.

Voice on the Page - A Teaching Workshop

This workshop translates the soul of a dancer’s research/art-making into an articulate & moving statement to help others understand Why We Do What We Do! When given the right tools, dance artists can be extraordinary writers. In this workshop we:

  • play games, make things and describe what we see/ experience;

  • write autobiographies of our research and embodied journeys;

  • study writing practices; laugh, write, discuss, make & make again, until writings emerge that share the stories, culture and beliefs of the maker.

This workshop is for artists in the professional field, graduate students and/or faculty in academia who are / or will be, seeking funding, jobs, promotion and tenure.

“Jan works with a clear goal in mind, but her methods are somewhat circuitous, using tactile exercises, physical explorations, and creative writing prompts. In allowing her to lead me “the long way” — which was, ironically, much more efficient — I arrived at written statements that evolved into a much more authentic provocation of why I do what I do and how those decisions and value systems relate to my lineage as a person, dancer, and teacher.”
